Chapter Twenty-One

QUENTIN

Quentin followed Danica to her house, waiting for the officers on her detail to arrive.

She got out of her truck, slammed the door, and went inside.

He sighed, waiting for the unmarked sedan to pull up beside him.

Officer Brady, sitting in the passenger seat, rolled down the tinted window. “Everything good?”

“Yeah, thank you.”

“You got it, boss,” he said before rolling his window back up before the car returned to its spot opposite Danica’s house.

Quentin pulled slowly away.

He’d burned rubber from the Pike High School parking lot to Coldwater and managed to make the twenty-minute trip to the bridge in a quarter hour without hitting anything with his SUV. Brady had called to let him know what was happening just as he’d arrived at Pike for a conversation with Varney.

He got to the prison in the nick of time by the look of things. Interrupted her ridiculous interrogation of Cole. Though pissed, he couldn’t blame her. Danica was naturally inquisitive, and doing her job. This was his fault for including her.

Quentin had asked for help because he had no choice, then he allowed her to keep on contributing because it seemed therapeutic for her to sift through a few clues and build a profile of the copycat. Win-win on paper, but now it felt like they were both about to lose something big. If Danica knew the truth, she’d lose the only father figure she had left, and he’d lose the only daughter he ever had.

He had a mess to clean up. He needed to stay on top of new events as they occurred, but he also needed a way to discourage Danica’s meddling. Or more specifically, he had to keep her from turning up something that might trigger wrong or dangerous memories.

He couldn’t trust that Danica would keep a discrepancy to herself. And no matter how thorough his damage control, she would almost for sure want to report it. Like Miles. He never understood that good cops occasionally got their hands dirty. And to be great, you sometimes had to dip them in mud.

That’s what it took to keep the bad guys off the streets. Monsters didn’t play fair, so sometimes it took cops willing to play fast and loose with the rules to stop the monsters.

Linus Cole was behind bars instead of burning new bodies for families to mourn because Quentin had done the difficult but necessary work of putting him away, and making sure he stayed locked up for the rest of his life.

Justice was all that mattered.

He turned on the radio, but was in no mood for The Cranberries. So he said “Been Caught Stealing” into the empty cabin and filled it with Jane’s Addiction instead. Quentin had considered seeing them tour with Nine Inch Nails, back when he had first joined the force, and was still living the semi-life of a college-something. He and Miles were already partners, but Miles and Emilia weren’t yet a thing. That would happen a month later, and Danica not long after that — before Quentin took what didn’t belong to him and maybe ruined everything.
